Starting with your own design, learn safe and effective carving techniques and take the project through to a finished print with the simple, eco-friendly tools and techniques from Japan. From complete beginners to professional artists, anyone can learn and use this technique. Mokuhanga is endlessly versatile, environmentally friendly, uses no toxic inks or solvents, has simple tools and materials and is inherently beautiful. There is no need for an expensive press or a lot of space. Work from your own home once you know the technique. Workshop ScheduleIn a two-day period students are briefly introduced to the history and concepts of Mokuhanga and taught the three main processes in mokuhanga – design, carving and printing. The end aim is to have produced a finished two colour print.This is a non-toxic, water-based printing technique

Day 1
After a brief introduction about mokuhanga, students will begin to develop their design idea and transfer it to the wooden block, ready to be carved. Safe, ergonomic and effective carving techniques are introduced to students who proceed to carve their design until it is ready for the printing stage. Key principles of carving related to mokuhanga printing are covered. The use of different tools are shown. A brief introduction to printing prepares students for the next day.
Day 2
Carving is finished and printing is introduced, with a focus on overcoming common mistakes for beginners aiming to produce an acceptable quality print. The use and handling of paper, various brushes, pigments, baren and other equipment is taught. Depending on the speed of work revisiting all three stages students are taught to correct common faults and produce several finished prints.

About the tutor
The Australian Mokuhanga School is run by Terry McKenna, professional mokuhanaga artist.
"I have been concentrating on producing woodblock prints since 2006, and inevitably became inspired by the richness of Japanese woodblock prints which are rightly world famous. I love the marriage of art and craft that is needed to produce mokuhanga." Originally trained in oil painting, Terry has a Masters Degree in Fine Arts as well as many years experience tutoring art media to people of all abilities and walks of life. Trained in Kyoto, Japan, he is a certified and experienced teacher of mokuhanga with wide experience teaching art to people of all levels. His work is exhibited and sold in Kyoto, Tokyo, New York, Australia & New Zealand. |
Terry has held numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1996, won awards, been involved in community arts initiatives, written reviews of other artist's work for newspapers, and managed and taught at an arts facility for people with disabilities for 10 years.
After living overseas in New Zealand and Japan for many years, he has returned to Australia in early 2014 with the aim of establishing the Australian Mokuhanga School.
