Description of Workshop
Wood engraving is a form of relief print that enables the creation of exquisitely detailed, yet graphic images, usually on a small scale. Prints can be produced without a press and using only a small number of specialised tools, so it is suitable for those without a large studio space or budget
Wood engraving is a traditional relief printing technique utilising end-grain wood to produce highly detailed and fine scale graphic images.
They are typically small scale and printed in black and white. Wood engraving was extensively used for book illustrations up until the early 20th century.
This two-day workshop is suitable for beginners or those with some prior printmaking experience who want to explore a new technique. The workshop will cover all aspects of wood engraving including historical context, image design, block preparation, correct use of engraving tools and hand printing. Participants will produce a black and white image of their own design and print a small edition. All specialised materials and equipment will be provided.
