Freshly picked from the artists’ bush garden, participants can arrange still life compositions of single botanical studies or bold ‘en plein air’ inspired compositions.

10.15: We’ll start with experimentation with watercolours using various effects and mark making with brushes. Techniques will include Techniques/ drying between layers/different brushes. Leaving white space Colour palette and mixing 11.00: Selection of flora to work with by each participant, arrangement. Tips on drawing arrangement/simplifying forms/view points – pencil sketches of still-life/composition on page. 11.30: Morning Tea 11.45: Drawing composition onto watercolour paper. Thinking about marks/bleeds/techniques to use in areas of the work.

After lunch: Painting of the still-life's, experimentation with layering of marks/bleeds.
Drying time for layers, work on multiple paintings. Adding detail elements – gouache to introduce lights. 3.40pm – Review of artworks. 3.50: Clean up and finish at 4pm. |

What to bring
Watercolour paper, 190gsm – 300gsm, a couple of pieces (size optional) Or one standard watercolour sheet per participant which we can cut into multiple pieces. Sketch pad, graphite pencil and eraser. Watercolour paints. You won’t need a large range of colours – If you don’t have any begin with red, yellow, blue, umber and bring any favourites you have. A water container and paint palette with wells. Assorted brushes – soft round type, fine point and Chinese brush. Bring your lunch Apron or paint shirt |
About the tutor
Nicola Moss is a visual artist based on the Gold Coast. Making fine art with paper, her practice investigates the value of healthy environment to communities and individuals. Nicola’s intricate paper cut work and installations harbour countless stories of place, human interaction and intervention.
Commencing her fulltime arts practice in 2006, Moss has exhibited regularly throughout Australia and overseas in group and solo exhibitions. In 2012 Moss won the Moreton Bay Region Art Award and has been a finalist in numerous art awards including: The Sunshine Coast Art Prize (2017 and 2014), The Gold Coast Art Prize (2013), the Geelong Contemporary Art Award (2012), Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize (2014 and 2012), and The City of Albany Art Prize (2011). Nicola Moss is represented by Spiro Grace Art Rooms, Brisbane.

Safety
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting ink on. Tie long hair back, wear goggles, masks where appropriate. Follow all instructions given by your tutor during your workshop.
