Collagraph and Beyond with Kay Watanabe

Make subtle and complex prints using simple and inexpensive materials. 

2 Day Workshop 10am – 4pm each day
For beginners and those wanting to revise and extend collagraph techniques.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to make collagraph prints.
​You will also learn how to make embossed works using the cardboard.
​The workshop will cover such techniques as chine-colle and colour roll as well.​

Before the workshop

Kay will advise participants about design ideas suitable for collagraph.

Workshop schedule

Day 1
An introduction using examples will foster an understanding of the collagraph prints and their possibilities. 

• Participants will create collagraph plates by gluing pieces of paper and other materials on the cardboard and/or by scraping the surface of the cardboard.
• Embossed works made from cardboard plates will also be made.
• The plates will  be varnished and allowed to dry ready for the next day. 

Day 2
Participants will have the opportunity to:

• prepare paper for printing
• ink up the collagraph plates for both relief and intaglio prints.
• apply chiné collé and colour roll
• print

Works will be printed on high quality printmaking paper.

LUNCH 
Tea and coffee are provided but you need to bring some morning tea and lunch. Workshop participants often choose to eat lunch together in the kitchen.
​Alternatively, the hotel next door has a  lunch menu (eat in and take-away).

Materials

PLATE MAKING

• cardboard (mat board)
• various materials to be glued on to the mat board.
• varnish
• brushes, masking tape, glue, paper for designing
• carborundum

INKING & PLATE CLEANING 

• tarletan, yellow pages, tissue paper,  
• etching and block print inks (various colours), linseed oil
• glass topped inking stations, palette knives, 
• vegetable oil, rags, paper towels for cleaning up

​Materials and equipment supplied 

PAPER

• printmaking paper (200 gsm or heavier)
• news print (butcher paper) and paper to design on
• ​trays for soaking paper an towels for drying

PRINTING

• presses which you will learn to set  ​

What you need to bring

• basic stationary such as pens and pencils.
• scissors
• old toothbrush
• rubber gloves

​Safety
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting ink on. Tie long hair back, wear goggles, masks where appropriate. Follow all instructions given by your tutor during your workshop.
