This experimental workshop with experienced artist Jill O'Sullivan will cover alternate aquatinting on copper plate with salt, sugar, spirit  or sandpaper, BIG hard and soft  grounds and coffee coffee lift . The focus is on experimental techniques that provide a less toxic way of working  and that  artists can apply  in their Intaglio practice. 
The  techniques above  as well as plate preparations and  safe clean ups methods will be demonstrated .

2 Day Intaglio EtchingWorkshop using Alternative Aquatints:
An Intaglio workshop for up to  8 participants
This experimental workshop will cover alternate aquatinting on copper plate with salt, sugar, spirit  or sandpaper, AA BIG hard and soft  grounds and coffee lift .
Depending on the numbers , a small edition of each plate should be  managed on the weekend.  However to print a larger edition the participants could join the monthly Etching MOB group or hire a press on their own later.
The focus is on experimental techniques that provide a less toxic way of working and that artists can apply in their Intaglio practice.
Demonstrations:
The above techniques as well as plate preparations and safe clean ups methods will be demonstrated.

 Students to Bring :
 Copper Plates (as below).
 One small plate will be supplied on the day as part of the workshop  materials (or buy them from Impress if we have  purchased a bulk supply)
Etching Tools :
Dry Point Needles, Blade Scrapers, Metal Files. (Impress has some of these etching tools but it would be best for participants to have their own)
Nitrile Disposable Gloves in your size
Rags, Cotton Buds, Small Brushes, A Sketch Book and Image Ideas (ready to go).
 A Spray bottle,
A Garbage Bag
Old Clean Towel for blotting paper
 Printing Paper such as:
Hahnemühle, Rosapina, Fabriano, Dutch Aquatint with a weight of 250 gsm
(A small amount of paper will be supplied by Impress on the day).
More Printing Paper can be purchased from Impress by participants or they can bring their own from other sources.
 
CARE:
 Wear closed footwear  and Protective clothing such as an apron or old clothes you don’t mind getting ink on.
Long hair must be tied back.
A Face Mask is always a good idea too when handling chemicals 
 
Tutor to Supply:
The Spirit Aquatint (and the recipe) and
A small toaster oven (which she has offered to donate) . 
Other ingredients: Tutor to supply and invoice Impress Printmakers
Cooking  Salt, Caster Sugar, Whiting,   Soya Sauce (cheap), Instant Coffee ( cheap )  
Cotton Pads, Rags for clean up
Cleaning spray (such as Pre- wash Orange power,  Bosistos,  Eucalyptus multi-cleaner or  Multichoice Cleaner (in black bottle at Woolworths)
Sandsoap
 
Etching Materials  Required:
 
Three or four  9 mm thick aa copper plates each  150 x 100  or 200  x 150 mm .

Jill O’Sullivan - Biograhy
PhD Creative Arts, MCA, BVA (Honours), BVA, Grad. Certificate of Tertiary Teaching
I started my art career in Mount Isa in the late 1980s through Flying Arts, workshops and the Macgregor Summer Schools. In 1993, I helped found the Mount Isa contemporary art group, Stack Arts In 1997
 I commenced a Bachelor of Visual Arts at James Cook University In 1997, and went on to complete Honours, Masters and then a PhD in Creative Arts.
After completing studies, I undertook International artist residencies in Wales (2013-14) and China 2015.
At James Cook University, I lectured and tutored in fine art practice, across various disciplines and art theory/history. Works are held in private international, National, State and regional gallery collections. I now work primarily in printmaking and drawing with interests in photography and animation.
Over the years I have judged exhibitions and curated several exhibitions and projects. I continue to teach technical and concept development at workshops in most art forms, often with a focus on differing experimental and safe techniques.
