Intaglio and the Printmaker – Gwenn Tasker

Both new and continuing students are all welcome in this 8 week course, 3rd Term  2017.  
​Although Gwenn is responsive to the printmaking pace and experience level of each participant, some etching experience will be an advantage.

Expectations
By the end of the 8 week course you will have had opportunity to  produce at least 2 fully resolved images in  copper and aluminium.

Materials cost
The $55 materials cost covers items such as, inks, grounds, proofing paper, tarlatan, use of tools, etching baths. It also covers two 20 x 30 cm plates—  one copper and one aluminium. Additional plates and varied sizes can be purchased privately. Paper for editioning is available for purchase through Impress.

The course
During this course you have the opportunity to deepen your understanding of the principals of etching. By deconstructing print examples— both original works and published images by well-known artists— you will discover how different tones, textures and lines might be achieved.
With Gwenn’s guidance, these discoveries inform your print making practice as you:

• Prepare printing plates - cutting, bevelling, filing, degreasing, polishing
• Apply soft, hard and permeable grounds.
• Use intaglio techniques including line etch, aquatint, sugar lift, burnishing, scraping, open bite, spit bite, blocking out, drypoint
• Learn to operate a press
• make registration sheets
• prepare and print multi-plate images
• become familiar with both copper and aluminium plates and their different qualities.
  

You will also learn about:

• The qualities of various printmaking papers and inks.
  
• Etching solutions and safety considerations,

What to bring  each week

1. apron
2. box of nitryl gloves (the blue ones)
3. closed toe shoes
4. mask
5. pencils, steel ruler (preferably 60 cm), eraser, craft knife or stanley knife
6. etching needle, burnisher, scrapers etc. if you have them.
7. start collecting sharp objects for mark making on plate
8. journal
   

About the tutor
Gwenn is a Brisbane based artist whose practice focuses on printmaking (etching and collagraphs) and drawing.  She graduated from the Qld College of Art in 2009 and has been pursuing her studio practice since, with regular exhibitions. 
She also teaches at the Brisbane Institute of Art.  Her major conceptual concern has been the relationship between the human and the nonhuman. ​​

​Safety
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting ink on. Tie long hair back, wear goggles, masks where appropriate. Follow all instructions given by your tutor during your workshop.
