Workshop Description
This workshop explores the wonderfully simple technique of Mokulito (wood lithography). A process by which one can draw an image on wood and print from it. The image can be added to, subtracted from, carved into and water coloured. It is a cheap, easy and chemical free method of lithography.
Mokulito is a technique discovered around 15 years ago in Japan, It was brought to Queensland five or six years ago by Professor Kuniko Satake from Tama University in Tokyo. Jennifer is one of only a handful of practitioners in the world outside of Japan. She studied the Mokulito process under the expertise of Professor Satake and has been practicing and running workshops in the process ever since. Through further investigation and experimentation, Jennifer has developed her own unique processes with the medium.
This workshop is intended to bring creative thinking and a variety of methods and techniques together to introduce printmakers to the delightfully uncomplicated process of Mokulito. This process uses the same principles as stone and metal plate lithography without the use of acids, etches or turpentine. It can be printed on either an etching or relief press and oil based relief inks can be used. The matrix is 3 ply Luan, structural or marine ply, and a simple three step process brings the matrix to the printing stage.
The aim of this workshop is to create one or more plates with different drawn images and print them individually, then experiment with overlaying them using different colours, adding water colours before printing or reduction printing. Source images can be hand drawn, or photocopy transferred onto plates (but they will need to be drawn over with the Sakura solid marker), plates may also be carved into with lino or woodcutting tools or drawing materials scraped back. This workshop is designed with the view of showing a number of printing methods and techniques that can be accomplished in a one day print workshop. The process is easy, the materials are inexpensive and the result is somewhere between a lithograph and a woodblock print. It is a relatively new and contemporary method of making art developed in Japan to walk alongside the more traditional methods of Mokuhanga and drawing.

About Jenny Sanzaro - Nishimura
Jennifer Sanzaro-Nishimura is one of only a handful of Mokulito practitioners outside of Japan. Jennifer has been a Lecturer in Print Media at Queensland College of Art since 2004 and has been a practising printmaker for over 20 years. She has a Doctorate in Visual Arts and exhibits nationally and internationally on a regular basis. She was president of Impress from 2008-14 and pivotal in securing Kedron Substation for Impress Printmakers Studio & Gallery. Her work is in numerous international, national, state and private collections.
Safety
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting ink on. Tie long hair back, wear goggles, masks where appropriate. Follow all instructions given by your tutor during your workshop.
