Workshop Description
Aquatint and soft-ground are used to quickly render tonality and texture in etched plates. Each with their own distinct appearance, they are equally suited for bold and subtle styles. This course will primarily focus on the spraypaint aquatint method used at Impress but will cover the use of traditional powdered rosin for use elsewhere.
Day 1
-Discussion of ground types, imaging techniques, plate choices, and etching strategies
-Demonstration of ground application and etching -Demonstration of printing
-Work time (including plate etching if necessary)
Day 2
-Demonstration of relief roll and selective inking -Multi-plate printing
-Any requested refresher or demonstration
-Guided work time
Materials supplied by participants:
Aprons, notebook/visual diary for note-taking, paper for printing, any personal tools desired, solvent-resistant gloves (disposable nitrile acceptable, heavy nitrile prefer- able), disposable gloves for inking if desired (nitrile, latex, vinyl acceptable), respirator recommended for work with solvents if available. Prepared etching plates, if available.
Maximum Participants: 10
SAFETY
Participants are advised to wear closed in shoes, suitable clothing or apron that you do not mind getting ink on. Tie long hair back, wear goggles, masks where appropriate. Follow instructions given by your tutor during your workshop.
Tutor Bio
Christopher Hagen is an American artist who holds an MFA from Illinois State University in the United States. Chris has worked with edition printers in Illinois and Minneapolis, and has taught workshops in both the USA and Australia.
