ARTISTS BOOKS

This workshop introduces the basics of Artist book making. Anyone can attend; no previous experience is required. Topics covered include:

  • Approaches to bookmaking
    • Composition and aesthetic values, finding the right format
    • Technical aspects - paper folding and ripping
  • Styles of bookmaking
    • Concertina, triangle book, square pop-up book, four hole book binding and exploring different types of book container

Completion of this workshop will allow student to make and experiment with several versions of hand bound, artist books! It is therefore recommended that students bring along any decorative papers, old artworks and ideas that can be incorporated in the book making process.

Sue Pickford previously completed an Associate Diploma in Fine Art, majoring in Ceramics at the Queensland College of Art, Brisbane. Currently, she is studying for Honours after completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a major in printmaking, also at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Sue was President of the Griffith University Printmakers’ Club during 2004/05 and is the current Treasurer of Impress Printmakers Studio Brisbane. She has exhibited in more than 50 group shows in the last 4 years, locally, in Brisbane, Townsville and other regional Galleries in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, and Tasmania and internationally, in Schondorf, Germany, Toronto, Canada, Hong Kong, Shanghai, China and Paris, France. She has been selected as a finalist for the Churchie Emerging Artist Exhibition and The Theiss Award. Her work is in several public and private collections including Griffith Artworks, The State Library Queensland, The Mackay Bookspace and The National Gallery. She has won several awards including the Trevor Lyons Memorial award and the RBWH 2000+ Artventure Award and a Highly Commended in the Royal Queensland Art Society’s Harold Richardson Drawing Prize.
