LINOCUT
with Karen Kaese

Sunday 30th March 10am-4pm

Impress members $85, non-members $100 including materials

Linocut printmaking can be very simple, and is an ideal medium for the beginning printmaker. There is no reason why your first print cannot be a great one if your design is good. Linocuts can also be taken to high levels of complexity through intricate cutting and pattern making and the use of multiple plates and reduction printmaking.

The workshop will cover:

  • A brief survey of well known linocut artists and their different styles.
  • Discussion and demonstration of methods of transferring the image to the plate.
  • Demonstration and exploration of cutting techniques and effect of pattern.
  • Demonstration and experience with printing with a barren and the press.

Participants should prepare a design that has areas of white, black and areas of pattern before the workshop. After spending some time sketching your idea, try work out a design with a medium black texta, thinking about the white that is left on the paper. At the workshop, when you are cutting your design, the white areas are the areas that will be removed after the image has been drawn onto the lino. We will be working with 15 x 20cm plates.
