Profile David Burrows
David Burrows
David is a Brisbane artist and screen printer with a background in photography and the graphic arts. He has an interest in all things Japanese and especially the traditions of woodblock printing. In his screen printing work he emulates much of the practice and appearance of Japanese prints with regard to subject, composition and the black "key block" which ties the design together and fortuitously deals with the screen printing problem of minute mis-registrations.
Applying modern photo stencil techniques and Photoshop to create and output perfectly registered film positives, the print is created in a unique work flow which merges the creative and technical challenges of screen printing with the Japanese aesthetic. It allows for critical registration across thirty or more colour runs and the screen print version of "bokashi" where ink blends or tonal gradations can be controlled across various angles.
David lists his goals as simply "to have more time to design and print and be in the studio and feel the pleasure of watching a work slowing build and re-invent and finally come together, an experience unique to screen printing."
