On a Roll [go to the online exhibition]
In 2005 Impress developed a fine art exhibition project to commemorate the 2005 centenary of voting rights for Queensland women and the 40th anniversary of Indigenous people’s right to vote in Queensland. This exciting project featured works by 33 prominent and emerging Queensland printmakers, with each artist being asked to print an edition of 40 works.
From the early planning stages the entire project was designed to reach and benefit the wider community. In addition to the exhibition, 40 solander boxes containing a full set of prints plus the catalogue and artist biographies were put together. Each artist received a box and the remaining boxes have gone to the collections of high profile institutions to be enjoyed by future generations of Queenslanders. The National Gallery of Australia, The Queensland State Library (James Hardy Collection), James Cook University in Townsville, The Queensland College of Art- Brisbane (Griffith University), Artspace Mackay and Impress Printmakers have acquired the prints for their collections.
As a further initiative to extend the range and influence of the project, over 280 catalogues were distributed to libraries across Queensland reaching far beyond the venues to which the exhibition itself will travel.
The Brisbane stage of the exhibition was held at The Arts Factory between the 3rd and 14th of September and the Redcliffe Cultural Centre hosted the exhibition from 19th September to 3rd October. The Robina Gallery on the Gold Coast hosted in December and Artspace Mackay will also exhibit the works at a later date.
On a Roll was proudly funded by the Queensland Government's Gambling Community Benefit Fund and was opened by Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC,
Governor of Queensland, at 6.30pm on the 7th of September at The Arts Factory, 84 Merivale St, South Brisbane.
